Eight months ago, she spent a night in the arms of Edmund Blackpool, the last night before he left for Waterloo. He never returned. Sarah Fairfax might have lost the love of her life, but she'd gained a child. A child that needs a father to claim him, rescue him from being a bastard. But before she can marry the Duke of Ravenwood, her lost love's friend, her lost love stops the ceremony.
Edmund Blackpool returned from the dead for one reason and one reason only. Sarah Fairfax. She's kept him alive on the battlefield and after, she's the woman he loves, and he'll be damned if he let another man, friend or not, marry her. But marriage is only the beginning and neither Edmund nor Sarah are fully prepared for what life has in store.
This would've been a lovely second-chance romance if it weren't for the heroine. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the hero, his friends, other secondary cast, the plot, the pacing or the writing. The one glaring problem, and a problem I couldn't get past while rating the story, was the heroine.
I just didn't understand the woman. Hormones or not, she was all over the place, having absolutely no idea what she wanted. She wanted the hero to want her, but she "knew" he wouldn't once he saw her post-baby body. She wanted the hero to love her, but she "knew" he didn't, because she "knew" he married her for her looks. Shallow much?! She wanted to be a good mother, but "knew" she couldn't be because her mother wasn't. Blah blah bilibbity blah. It was all about her...And I couldn't stand her.
The heroine single-handedly ruined the story for me.
